In Judah is God known: His name is great in Israel. In Salem also is His tabernacle ...Psalm 76 |

Here at Salem UCC we have been worshiping and praising God since 1867. For over 130 years, in more than one location, Salem Church has sought to welcome and minister to the people of Louisville. That commitment stands, in the face of new and unexpected challenges. Salem Church is not a congregation that has fled challenges. Salem Church is one that is constantly searching for new ways to minister, and it welcomes any who wish to be part of God's work. We understand, as did our spiritual forebear, Pastor Robinson (sending the Pilgrims off from Holland to America) that, "God has yet more light to break forth from (God's) holy word." This is a congregation looking for and following that light. Built in 1969, our building won an architectural award. Our worship space is arguably the most attractive in town, and bespeaks the people's attitude of being "in, but not of the world", of not wanting worship to be shut off from the world. The building was designed to be - and is - handicapped accessible, totally stair-free. Salem gladly opens it's doors to neighborhood and other groups, realizing that God works in many ways. The congregation has helped build a Habitat house and, with another congregation, helped settle two refugee families, sent it's pastor on a mission trip to help rebuild Nicaragua after Hurricane Mitch and participates in such community-wide activities as health awareness and education, Hunger Walk, pro-peace activities, and a community-ministry program. Salem Church is proudly part of the United Church of Christ and is thereby connected with congregations across the country and around the world. We are in partnership with the Christian Church [Disciples of Christ], and participate in the World Council of Church, the National Council of Churches, the Kentucky Council of Churches, the Kentuckiana Interfaith Community and the SouthEast Area Ministries. We know who we are and are bold to seek God's will with others who wish to do that as well. Our communion table is open to all who wish to know the presence of The Christ in their lives and who wish to share in the community of God's people. | |
